Why a Trial is so important to your wedding day!

I did a trial recently that reminded me just how important it is to book in a preview or trial prior to your wedding date. This bride in particular had a very specific bold eye look she was after, which was beautiful however, her face shape and eye type was not compatible with the design she was after as she would have needed stronger bone structure along her brow and more space between her lid and brow area. Unfortunately I have hooded eye lids myself so I have had to learn the hard way ( hello teen years!) what does and doesn't work on difficult eye shapes.

moral of the story is if we hadn't met prior to her wedding, I would have shown up on the day with the plan of only needing 45 minutes to complete her makeup and realizing on the day that it isn't compatible with her bone structure meaning she would've ended up running late on the day due to extra time needed making sure she was happy with what we completed for her bridal look, or running out of time meaning she would then be stuck with a look she wasn't happy with in her wedding photos.

Whats the difference between a freelance makeup artist and one at a makeup counter?

Multi billion dollar companies have created the idea that makeup counter sales people are equal if not better to freelance, trained, experienced and qualified makeup artists, beauty therapist and "skin specialists" in order to earn the public's dollar.

Makeup counter employees are hired as sales people, not makeup artists, meaning their goal is to upsell the consumer as much as possible, not providing a high quality service. Back in March I had a bride comment that I was the first non counter makeup artist and she could already tell the difference in quality while I was setting up and sanitising tools prior to her service. Makeup counters in Myers and David joins employees work on a low base rate ( average $15p/h) plus commission meaning if you don't leave having bought something they're in trouble, hence their goal being to sell you as many products from their counter as possible. Being sales people they're often not qualified to give advise or analyse your skin properly, which can lead to consumers buying products not suited to their skin type, skin tone / undertone or a product the buyer cannot use.

while they offer cheap or free treatments to market to a certain demographic, and can put their marketing tactics into play, convincing consumers that they need "X" product and "Y" to make it last. Knowing that they need the sales commission, hence the use of potentially contaminated tester products ( hello cold sores!), distractions during service ( i.e. serving other customers during your service) and up selling during service, like "extras" that would finish the look like lashes, powder and lip gloss. Your face is never their priority, your wallet is. speaking from my own experience preparing for my year 10 school formal, I was booked at a certain Australian owned makeup counter at Charlestown Square, for a 3pm  45 minute makeup. I was talk halfway through the application that the lashes I was promised when I booked a month ago were no longer included but I could buy them at a surcharge and that if I wanted a "sample" of the lip colours I would also have to pay for ( which I wouldn't afford being 15 at the time), during my service my " artist" was distracted several times by other customers, meaning my 45 minute booking turned into a 2 hour makeup having to re-explain the the artist what I wanted each time ( bronze smokey eye, with a winged liner and neutral lip), having her rush my makeup as she had other girls from my school booked after me as well. I left running late and actually missed out on having my photos taken with my friends ( perhaps a blessing in disguise with my yellow/ orange foundation and wonky liner). Now I'm not saying this goes for all makeup counter staff but I've now heard enough stories from friends , family and clients that have experienced similar situations in their youth.

Marketing and ambiance is a huge part of makeup / beauty counter sales, next time your around one check out their lighting situation, is it fluorescence bulbs and yellow toned? this gives whoever is in the chair the a more diffused / tanned look making them think they look better with "X" products, and as its an OHS issue Australian counters do not refund opened packaging meaning you're stuck with the wrong colour their professionals matched you too.

Makeup artists always prefer natural or white lighting where possible as it allows us to create a better application for our clients. and Satisfaction of clientèle is our business, as a luxury service we communicate prior to your service, prepared and sanitise our kits in our own time ,travel to you, pay tolls / parking and give you our undivided attention until your service is complete. Stock every colour needed in professional quality and luxury brands covering every skin tone, skin type, undertone, eye colour face shape and so on.

we're focused on you, your experience and finished look! hope this has answered any questions for my younger audience and wasn't too ranty!

How to look your best on your wedding day naturally!

Back again!

Today I read an article claiming, that by drinking 3 litres of water a day over a 4 week period left the author looking ten years younger. So I thought I have better compile a little something to help you prepare for your big day!

  • Diet; while yes this seems obvious, maintaining a healthy diet in the lead up to your wedding is so important when you consider not only your physic, but your facial features and appearance too, concentrate on lowering your intake of calories, primarily sugars and fats. Also trying to cut down your daily intake of Caffeine to reduce puffiness / tired eyes.
    • I've also had several bridal clients comment, saying that the removal of gluten from their diet aided in feeling less bloated, feel " lighter" and healthier overall.
  • Water intake; increasing your water intake will cleanse you body, increasing your skins natural radiance, detoxing your body and improving problem areas on the skin ( redness, dark circles, breakouts, ect)
  • Exercise; toning your body in the lead up to your nuptials will help you feel more confident and comfortable being in the spot light on your big day, but remember Rome wasn't built in a day and an exercise plan requires both time and commitment to see ongoing results.
  • Organisation; knowing that everything is organised and in place will allow you to feel less stressed in the lead up to your wedding, and hopefully avoiding stress related weight gain and breakouts on the facial area. don't leave booking vendors in at the last minute, as they may end up being booked by someone else, leaving you stuck with a service you don't enjoy.
  • Sleep; ensuring you're getting the average 8 hours needed a night will also you to not only function at 100% but aid in preventing tired eyes.
  • Skincare; in the lead up to your wedding consider starting a skin care routine that includes a daily moisturiser and night eye cream, regardless of your wedding prevention is the key in the fight against aging skin. Preventing fine lines and wrinkles will help you feel more comfortable not only on your wedding day, but also your day to day life.
  • Maintenance; Allow yourself space in your budget for professional waxing and upkeep of your brows and facials. Your face will we the focus of photos and video all day, By creating a beautiful canvas your makeup artist will be able to create a gorgeous lasting look for your big day. Giving yourself this down time / pampering is also a fantastic mid week pick me up ;)

What goes into a Makeup Artists Rates.

I'm often asked my friends, what I make / what my rates are as a makeup artist, and while from the out side it may seem like a lot when it's broken down it's like any other job. When considering a makeup artist for your wedding budget can be an issue, and with every artist charging a different rate, while some may seem costly, you're paying for alot more then just having your makeup done on the day.  Consider the following when collecting quotes from makeup artists, and take a look through their websites or ask questions so you know what you're paying for.

  • Use of products in kit; consider the amount of products needing to be stocked constantly to allow us to work on any and every face ( all ethnicities, skin types, age groups and techniques/services)  Also the quality of the products we use i.e. Maybelline / cover girl vs. Chanel / MAC and professional quality products like face atelier and viseart.
  • Correspondence;  time away from our families replying to emails, calls, texts and coordinating with either yourself or your wedding planner to allow us to allocate enough of our time to complete your service needs, confirming any assistants we may need, confirming parking arrangements with the venue, discussing the looks needed on the day and making sure you're 100% happy with what you and your party will receive on the day
  • Assistants; if you've booked a particularly large group a secondary artist may be needed
  • Professional Status; for alot of MUAs out there this is our primary and only income, like everyone else we have bills, taxes, rent and families to feed (in my case a particularly sassy black cat). As well as other staff like assistants as mentioned above, but also potentially accountants, personal assistants, admin staff, web designers, graphic designers ect
  • Cost of running a business; registering an ABN, time needed book keeping, cost of trialing products, paying contractors to design promotional material, websites, advertising, studio costs ( if applicable), maintaining disposable products for sanitation, paying tax and bills, ect.
  • OHS and Hygiene; time taken to sanitize all our products, hygienic use of products, disposal of out of date or contaminated products that may contain bacteria build up, deep cleaning and sanitation brushes, sponges / airbrush ,ect
  • Insurances;  ensuring your safety during and after service.
  • Training; Time and money taken to study our craft, gaining certification, and then continual training to further our skills and technique
  • Advertising; Making sure we're in places you can find our services ( social media, websites, wedding directories, expos ect)
  • Travel; wear and tear on our vehicles, as well as carting our kits up and downstairs, to where ever you need us set up.
  • Time; before dawn wake up times to ensure we get your party completed before your due t leave
  • Superannuation; self funded superannuation and saving for our future / retirement.
  • And finally, our time; by paying your deposit you have basically bought a day of our lives, rain, hail or shine we will be there ready to provide the services you've booked on your big day.
